Advanced 1 RAD Ballet
RAD Advanced 1 Ballet is suitable for pupils who have completed RAD Intermediate ballet or equivalent. Beginners age 12 and up who wish to study RAD grades are recommended to start off in the Wednesday evening General Ballet class, and then be assessed and placed in a suitable RAD Graded class after a couple of terms.

A pass at RAD Advanced 1 constitutes a Level 4 Certificate in Vocational Graded Examination in Dance and is equivalent to an A Level or NVQ Level 3. The higher level qualifications, such as Advanced 1 ballet, are accepted as benchmarks of achievement by vocational schools, attended by the majority of young dancers intending to enter the profession. They are also taken into account by universities and other HE institutions offering degree courses and programmes in dance and dance teacher education.
The underlying philosophy of RAD Advanced 1expands upon embodied knowledge and understanding of ballet technique nurtured in the Intermediate syllabi, inspiring students technically, artistically, musically and creatively with exercises that encourage critical thinking and physical fitness while also developing a sense of theatre, movement dynamics and musical interpretation.
Pointework continues to be part of the examinable criteria in RAD Advanced 1&2, and the students are also expected to perform their Variation “en pointe”, for which they can wear a classical tutu or short wraparound skirt. RAD Advanced 1 uniform is a black thin-strapped leotard. Character work is not part of the examination syllabus.
